Map and profiles of Northern Railroad.

Series 4, 84, 89, 90 of record group 59-4 consists of a map and profiles (1837) of the Northern Railroad, originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The map (in 2 pieces) shows the Railroad from Port Huron to Shiawassee and from Shiawassee to Grand Haven. The first section of the map is 26 1/2" x 52" with a horizontal scale of 2 miles : 1 in. and a vertical scale of 240 ft. : 1 in. The second section is 26 1/2" x 52" in size. The record group includes 5 negative photostats of the map as one piece. The remainder of the record group consists of three pages of accounts relating to the financing of the surveys. The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
